About Milkshed Ledger

Milkshed Ledger is an independent, English-language publication with a short Spanish introduction. It explains the rules, research and everyday practices behind water quality, animal care and food safety on California dairies, for the people who run them, the people who work on them and the people who live next to them.

The name

A milkshed is the area that supplies milk to a market, much as a watershed gathers water into a river. In California the two overlap: the dairies of the Central Valley sit above the groundwater basins that many valley towns drink from. A ledger is the record a dairy keeps of what it applies, inspects and ships. Our logo puts a drop over two ledger lines and the line of a field.

How we work

This domain

The cdqa.org domain was previously used by a different project. Milkshed Ledger is a new and independent publication: it is not that project, does not continue it, does not speak for it, and has no connection with the organisations that ran it. It is not a public body and does not certify farms or issue any approval. Where we mention real programmes, agencies or universities — including dairy quality assurance programmes in California — we do so only to report facts about them, with links to their own sources.

Some older addresses on this domain received links over the years. Where a link pointed to a topic we cover, the address now leads to our own article on that subject; documents formerly published here are not republished.
